Looks And Design

The first look of the notebook will give you a feeling that the machine will take extra space on your desk. With dimensions measuring 17.4 x 11.6 x 1.6 inches and weighing nearly 8.6 pounds, the notebook is definitely a desktop replacement. The notebook is made up of thick plastic which makes it pretty much durable. Thanks to the “Fusion Finish”, the notebook looks elegant and solid while being gripped.

The eye catching glossy finish of the machine lengthens from the lid to bezel. Portability is an issue with the machine because of its weight, but then you do not carry desktop everywhere, do you? Overall we were pretty much impressed by the looks and design of the machine.

Screen

The 18.4 inches screen is one of the major attractions of the machine. The machine displays colors of resolution measuring 1600×945 pixels. The quality of the images is very good and the colors rendered are quite sharp and vibrant. However, because of the glossy coating on the screen, there were a number of reflections. The wide screen ensures that viewing angles are so very good. The screen is good enough for playing 720p HD videos.

Keyboard And Touchpad

Though the keyboard of Toshiba Satellite P505-S8010 is spacious, but we felt that certain keys do not give that tactile feedback which many users may like. However, the layout of the keyboard is pretty good and there is a full number pad and greatly sized shift keys. On the left side of the keyboard you get touch sensitive media control which allows you to play, pause music files. But the media keys were too sensitive and they also made beeping sounds which annoyed us to some extent.

The touchpad of the machine measures 3.3×1.6 inches which offered pretty smooth navigation. The mouse buttons were pretty easy to press but we were not impressed by its texture. The touchpad supports multi touch gestures such as scrolling and pinching.

Audio

Audio in the notebook are powered by a couple of Harmon Kardon speakers which gave us pretty good sounds. High and low-end sounds were separated very nicely and the sounds were pretty easily audible in a large room. Since the laptop is targeted towards multimedia users, hence we expected the speakers to be of top class and they did not disappoint us.

Ports

Toshiba has ensured that Satellite P505 offers a complete set of ports. You will get three USB2.0 ports, a HDMI, VGA, ExpressCard/54, FireWire, Ethernet, modem port, Kensington lock slot and a 5-in-1 memory card reader. Apart from it you also get an eSata/USB port.

Webcam

Above the display you will find a webcam which produced a bit of murkier visuals when we chatted with our friend. The colors were a bit washed out and dull. We hoped the web cam to deliver a better performance since the machine is targeted towards entertainment lovers.

Heat

Heat is one very important aspect for any laptop. Satellite P505 is a relatively cool machine and even after playing full HD videos for sometimes, the machine remained relatively cool.

Graphics

Satellite P505 is powered by Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card which gave a decent performance.

Battery Life

The notebook is powered by a 6 cell 4000mAH battery. Since the laptop is high on multimedia performance, hence we did not expect it to give a long runtime. The runtime of the battery is just approximately 2 hours.

Software

Toshiba has integrated certain software in the Satellite P505 such as 30 days Norton Internet Security 2010, two month trial of Microsoft Office Home, Corel DVD MovieFactory, Skype etc. One year warranty is provided with the machine.
